Genetic counseling is a specialized medical consultation. During this appointment, you will meet with physicians who specialize in medical genetics and can provide guidance on genetic conditions. These are conditions that are caused or influenced by changes in a person's genetic material (genes).
About Our Genetic Consultations
What Is Genetic Consultation Service?
What Is a Genetic Counseltation?
Genetic counseling provides patients and their families with information about hereditary conditions and diseases with a genetic component. We explain the underlying causes, patterns of inheritance, and available options for treatment and prevention. We also provide clear information about prenatal testing (testing performed during pregnancy) and predictive genetic testing (testing used to assess the risk of developing a condition later in life).
The Process from a Consultation to a Diagnosis
When a genetic cause is suspected for a physical or developmental condition, a comprehensive evaluation is conducted through the Genetic Consultation Clinic. To support this assessment, we ask that you provide all available medical records, such as prenatal records, child health records, physician reports, and other relevant documentation.
The consultation begins with a review of your family medical history, including the creation of a family tree (pedigree). This is followed by a physical examination. Particular attention is given to subtle physical features, such as the shape of the ears, eyes, or fingers, as these can sometimes provide important clues about an underlying genetic condition.
If indicated, genetic testing may be recommended, typically using a blood sample. In many cases, it is also helpful to include blood samples from the parents.
Once the test results are available, we will discuss the findings, outline any recommended next steps, and explain what the results may mean for the individual and their family.
